A new year's resolution

So here we go again, another year. Learn a little more, grow a little older, and hopefully wiser. Like last year I slept through New Year's Eve. Anyway, how can we actually be sure that the New Year begins at Midnight daylight saving time? Real solar time would be more appropriate surely. Who determined that the day begins at midnight anyway? In the Bible the new day always began at sunset. A much more civilized time to celebrate the arrival of the new year.

Time, what reality does it possess? The older we get the more compact it becomes. The days just flit past until in old age we lose even an awareness of what day it is. My own theory is that as we get older we pack less into each day, we slow down, and so with less happening in each day, the day seems shorter, time goes faster. Anyway, time only exists in the mind of God, for "with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day." Time is but a wink within the existence of God, given on loan to a fading Universe.

The Bible tells us to redeem time, to make the most of every opportunity. At the beginning of the year we try to persuade ourselves to do just that, and so out comes all the New Year's resolutions. We determine to make the most of our time. Of course we always fail. Our problem is that our lives are already so full that we have little time to spare.

A strange phrase "time to spare", as though time were a commodity to be accumulated. All that ever seems to happen with it is that it flits past and we are only left with our memories. Once we were young, once our children were young, once our grandchildren were young.......

We may muse on the issue of time all we like, but the Bible cuts through and proclaims "it is time to seek the Lord". Our time on this planet is but a speck in eternity, quickly gone. Yet to seek after the Lord of this Universe and find him is to gain an eternity of endless time. It is to be more than a mere fading memory. "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die".
